Synopsis

Much has happened since the last edition of The Challenge of Democracy was published. Most ominously, the September 11 terrorist attacks.

Many say that "things will never be the same again," and, concerning core aspects of our government and politics, they may be right.

We also endured the 2000 presidential election that ended in a disputed outcome. A month after the election, our modern, affluent democracy still could not deter¬mine the identity of the next president. Angry protesters gathered outside South Florida election offices while lawyers for Bush and Gore challenged each other in courtrooms across the state and, eventually, before the Supreme Court in Washington.
